MAY 2018 CHUSFS – HRFU TRAINING MISSION

From May 7, 2018 to May 11, 2018, a group of medical providers from Hernia Help (Hernia Repair for the Underserved) visited Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Saint Francois de Sales (CHUSFS) for a training mission in hernia surgery.  The mission was coordinated by Dr. Louis-Franck Telemaque and Dr. Jean-Fritz Jacque of HUEH with Ms. Chantal Corrioland and the administration of CHUSFS.  The visitors included two surgeons, two surgical residents, a pediatric anesthesiologist, a critical care pulmonologist, nurse anesthetist, an advanced practice pediatrics nurse, and five nurses.  The intent of the mission was to train Haitian surgeons in Lichtenstein hernia repair for adult patients, pediatric inguinal hernia repair, and laparoscopic hernia repair.  In total, 63 patients received operations including 27 children.  7 laparoscopic cases and 9 ventral repairs were performed.  Haitian trainees included Dr. Boaz Pierre of Port-de-Paix and Dr. Ulrick Dezard of Carrefour.  Two surgeons from HUEH, Dr Sylvio Augustin and Dr. Jacques, underwent additional training in advanced laparoscopic techniques.  Surgery and anesthesia residents from HUEH and La Paix also participated in training and a graduate Anesthesiologist Dr. Michele Fanfan received Pediatric Anesthesia training from a Pediatric Anesthesiologist Dr. Cynthia Ferris.   There were no reoperations or immediate complications.

Dr. Boaz Pierre, attending surgeon from Port-de-Paix, participated in advanced hernia training at CHUSFS. He is pictured with a patient who underwent emergency laparotomy in Port-de-Paix for typhoid perforation with diffuse contamination. As expected, the patient then developed a large ventral hernia. Dr. Boaz referred the patient to the Hernia Center of Excellence at CHUSFS and participated in his abdominal wall reconstruction in May 2018. Congratulations for a job well done, Dr. Boaz!
